The Challenge

Military personnel and other training users require regular opportunities to practise in realistic environments using familiar physical equipment. Effective training must accommodate different experience levels, configurable target distances, and varying difficulty settings while maintaining consistency across repeated sessions.

However, access to physical shooting ranges, equipment costs, scheduling constraints, and safety requirements can limit training frequency and flexibility. The client needed a simulation platform that could combine physical equipment interaction with immersive virtual environments while supporting different training requirements.

Spatio developed a dual-mode VR and Mixed Reality Firearms Training Simulator, integrating a physical firearm replica with configurable virtual ranges and interactive targets.

The Simulator Experience

VR & Mixed Reality Firearms Training Simulator

The simulator combines a Meta Quest 3 headset with a controller-powered Glock 17 replica, featuring a familiar form factor, matched weight, custom electronics, and an integrated recoil mechanism.

The experience supports two distinct training modes. In VR Mode, trainees enter a fully virtual shooting range with configurable target distances and difficulty settings. In Mixed Reality Mode, virtual targets appear within the user’s visible real-world surroundings, combining physical spatial awareness with digital training elements.

Both modes use the same physical replica integration, providing a consistent interaction experience across different training environments. Instructor controls and performance analytics support session management, evaluation, and feedback.

Key Features & Training Flow

Configurable Virtual Shooting Ranges

Adjustable target distances and difficulty settings provide flexible range configurations for different training requirements.

Dual VR & Mixed Reality Modes

Switch between fully immersive virtual ranges and mixed reality environments with digitally placed targets.

Physical Replica Integration

A tracked Glock 17 replica combines familiar form factor, matched weight, and custom electronics for realistic physical interaction.

Integrated Recoil Feedback

A mechanical recoil mechanism provides physical feedback, connecting replica interactions with the virtual training experience.

Flexible Training Configurations

Multiple training modes and adjustable environments support different practice requirements and experience levels.

Performance Analytics & Instructor Review

Session data and instructor feedback provide visibility into training performance and progress across repeated sessions.

How Spatio Delivered It

Spatio extended its existing firearms simulation capabilities to develop a dual-mode VR and Mixed Reality training experience using Unity3D and Meta Quest 3.

The project involved integrating a physical Glock 17 replica with custom electronics, tracking technology, and a mechanical recoil mechanism. Spatio also developed two distinct environments: a fully virtual shooting range and a Mixed Reality experience that places digital targets within the user’s physical surroundings.

Configurable range settings, multiple training modes, and instructor controls were incorporated to support flexible session delivery and performance review. Developed as a working simulator for pilot evaluation, the platform also provides an expandable foundation for integrating additional firearm models and physical training interfaces.
