The Challenge

High-throughput automotive manufacturing requires new employees to learn complex assembly procedures before working independently on the production line. Operators must understand the correct sequence, component placement, tool handling, scanning procedures, electrical tasks, and safety requirements across multiple vehicle models.

With a workforce of more than 3,000 employees and approximately 30 to 70 people joining or leaving each month, workforce readiness was a continuous challenge. Conventional training could take at least 15 days and relied heavily on instructors, physical training setups, and access to production environments.

Spatio developed a working Mixed Reality assembly training concept that connects tracked physical tools with virtual workflows, allowing operators to build practical assembly skills before entering production.

Using Meta Quest 3, trainees work through realistic automotive assembly procedures while physically handling tracked replicas of drills, scanners, and other shop-floor tools. The system recognizes the position and movement of these tools and represents their actions within the Mixed Reality training environment.

Trainees begin with guided workflows that demonstrate the correct component, tool, sequence, scanning step, and safety action. They then repeat the procedure independently under assessment conditions, allowing the system to identify sequence errors, incorrect tool use, missed steps, repeat attempts, and overall task performance.

Key Features & Training Flow

Physical Tool Tracking

Drills, scanners, and other physical replicas are tracked inside the MR environment, helping trainees develop realistic tool familiarity.

Multi-Assembly Training

The platform can support front-end, rear-end, engine, chassis, electrical, scanning, tool-handling, and safety procedures.

Guided Workflow Training

Step-by-step visual instructions teach operators the correct tools, component placement, sequence, and safety actions for each procedure.

Independent Skill Assessment

Trainees repeat assembly procedures without guided assistance, demonstrating their ability to complete workflows accurately and independently.

Multi-Model Training Library

New vehicle models, revised procedures, electrical tasks, and updated SOPs can be added to a reusable assembly training library.

LMS-Integrated Analytics

Completion, task time, sequence errors, incorrect tool use, repeat attempts, and assessment scores provide measurable visibility into readiness.

How Spatio Delivered It

Spatio developed a Mixed Reality workflow simulation for a leading Tier 1 Automotive Supplier with tracked physical equipment. Detailed assembly procedures were translated into guided digital workflows while physical tool replicas provided the tactile familiarity operators need for shop-floor work.

The architecture was designed as an expandable training platform rather than a simulator for one assembly procedure. Additional vehicle models, assembly processes, tools, electrical procedures, safety modules, and revised SOPs can be incorporated into the same training framework.
